Bloomfield’s newest industry in the industrial park south of Bloomfield manufactures three products for use in the construction of steel buildings — custom slit coils of steel, matching fasteners, and cut-to-order soffits.

The three brands manufactured in the building at 3 Bader Street are CoilSpot, Wildcat Fasteners, and SpeedLap.

All three share a mission: “Empower rollformers to grow with confidence by providing fast, dependable access to coils, fasteners, and soffits. Backed by three trusted brands and one unified commitment to excellence.”

Darin Westhoff, president of the company, said CoilSpot and Wildcat Fasteners were begun in 2021 and SpeedLap came into being in April of 2023. All three companies operated separately until April 1, 2025 when they combined operations for efficiency in production, sales, and distribution.

Westhoff said it made sense to combine the companies because “all sell to the same customers — rollformers nationwide. We sell to 170 companies in 42 states. Metal Wholesale of West Grove is just one of those customers.

“We don’t sell to lumberyards or individuals,” he added. “Our three businesses grew out of Metal Wholesale’s need for the products. Rollformers need high-quality coils of steel, fasteners and accessories, and soffits.”

CoilSpot custom slits steel coils in 38 colors for steel buildings.

CoilSpot, Wildcat Fasteners, and SpeedLap all use Sherwin-Williams paint palettes so colors will match on all three products.

While colored steel has become popular in metal buildings, customers don’t have matching screws,” Westhoff noted, “so we custom-paint screws. Our paint team is really good at this.”

The paint for the Wildcat Fasteners is matched to a swatch of steel, and the screws are spray-painted in batches of 850.

SpeedLap grew out of a nationwide need for cut-to-order soffits in multiple colors. SpeedLap has one of only two machines in the U.S. designed for this purpose and that machine was designed specifically for the local industry by an Australian company.

“We ordered the machine during Covid,” Westhoff said, “and it took a long time to get. When we got this, one of our team members said, ‘Dude, this machine’s good!’

“We can make and deliver the soffits in three-to-five days,” Westhoff said. “Those (industries) on a thoroughfare route can get it in 24 hours. The industry average for delivery is two to six weeks. Typically, everything that is ordered from us is manufactured and shipped out the same day.

“That’s faster and more efficient than Amazon,” Westhoff emphasized.

The speed with which the product can be delivered quickly launched sales for the company and 65 new customers have come on board since January of this year.

“We could never make it with just our customers from southern Iowa,” Westhoff said. “We often sell to 12-18 states per day.”

Another unique service that attracts small businesses is flexibility with minimum order requirements. “It’s much easier for small businesses to get our product,” Westhoff added.

The company has 15 employees: four in outside sales, four assigned to inside sales and purchasing, and seven in production.

Calvin Mathews is the plant’s general manager. “He makes things happen,” Westhoff said.

The outside salesmen cover the whole country and usually get one new customer per day. “Customers seem to love our service,” Westhoff said, “and their orders tend to increase. Southern Iowa is a small part of our market.”

Westhoff said every employee is valued in the company and everyone is assigned a leadership role.

The company has three types of meetings — production, sales, and leadership. “The torch is passed at every meeting,” Westhoff said. “Someone different leads the meeting each time. This develops leadership skills.”

During the meetings, actions, issues, and new ideas are discussed and team members are assigned to work on solutions and report back at the next meeting.

Problem-solving is encouraged from all on the job.

“Most of the time, we let them (our employees) solve problems,” Westhoff said. “We ask for three solutions to a problem and then ask, ‘What is the best possible solution? What do you think?”

Westhoff said the company also benefits from cross-training. “Calvin has done much of this so the guys can jump in and do others’ jobs when needed due to demand. No one says, ‘That’s not my job.’ Everyone knows how to do everything.”

Westoff predicts the company will move 15,000 tons of steel this year. “That’s 750 semi loads out of this little building in Bloomfield, Iowa,” he said proudly.

Looking into the future, Westhoff said he expects the company to add more products and add new customers nationwide.

“We think we can continue to grow business and continue to serve the entire U.S. from this location,” he commented.

I have always loved how Jesus explained his own role through parables regarding sheep and the shepherd. John 10:7-9 says this: “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; who…
